Epidemiology

  • .38 - 2.6 per 1000 term live births
  • 73% Erb-Duchenne's Palsy . 2% Klumpke Palsy
  • 25% total plexus injury
  • 4% bilateral
  • Right upper extremity more commonly involved

Brachial Plexus Injury

  • Classic teaching : "95% will improve on their own"
  • Latest studies : - If normal by 3 months, 33% still have problems - If deficit(s) after 3 months, 95% have problems
  • Other problems: - Spinal cord injury: foot weakness - Sympathetic nerves: temperature, blood flow changes
